Red to the Bone
Judy Chartrand | Solo Exhibition
Presented by Macaulay + Co
Opening September 6th
Macaulay + Co is thrilled to announce a solo exhibition “Red to the Bone” by Vancouver based Judy Chartrand. The exhibit presents a collection of four diorama lightboxes and a sculptural installation. In the diorama series Chartrand asserts sardonic humour to tackle themes such as gender dynamics, the physical ramifications of whitewashed advertising, class biases, and systemic racism. Her protagonist, a cartoon-like representation is seen lounging, driving and taking selfies in various locations within the confines of the diorama. From urban landscapes of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to intimate bedroom settings, and even extending to historical sites, her lead man seems to take it all in stride.
In her “White Fantasies” bedroom compositions, Chartrand adorns the surroundings with pin-up posters showcasing movie stars such as Farah Fawcett, Rachel Welch, Bo Derek, and others. Alongside these, a blend of movie promotional posters bearing titles like “The Weird Love Makers” and “The Pleasure Machines” intermingle with Red Power posters, stereotypical Indian prayers, cherished family photographs, and a symbolic dream catcher. Notably, the bed lies beneath a solitary bar light bulb, poignantly symbolizing the ache of unattainable desires.
Judy Chartrand (b.1957) is a contemporary artist of Manitoba Cree heritage currently based in Vancouver, BC. who grew up in the notoriously disadvantaged urban corridor of Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.
